It's just that most ppl start out like age 3 and they are real good. What if I try out and I suck really bad and make a total fool of myself when everyone's been playing for like 5 years??

How old are you? My boys are 6, 4, 3, and 1 and they each have there own football, Bball, soccer and volleyball. They have even taken Classes for all at the rec center.

I think anything can be learned at any age with proper dedication. Aslo with perserverance, so never give up. Start today!! Go get a Ball and dribble all day every day. Learn to do it without looking at the ball and with both hands.

Go find a local hoop were you can go to everyday and run 50 wind sprints back and forth on the court. Than, Shoot 100 free throws. Check out your local Rec program and join a team. You could also ask your school's sports director for more info how you can work on training yourself, and maybe the coach is a teacher. You can ask the coach directly for ideas of drills you can work on and even any question you have with technique. Find out when the school gym is open for shooting around. Work out EVERYDAY, if anything when it comes to tryouts, you can be in great shape, hopefully ahead of others.

And since you are online, you can also research Bball Training websites for tips and the full conceptof the game.

You can do it, good luck!!

Basketball in fact is a very easy sport to learn. However, it takes a lot of encouragement and enthusiasm, especially at first, because you easily get discouraged when you miss a shot or make a mistake. Any age is great to start. To make your high school team, the latest you could proably start at is 10 or 11. The only critical points that need lots of emphasis are learning how to play with intelligence and learning how to shoot the ball the right way. Some of the best shooters, including Ray Allen and Gilbert Arenas, even have DVDs that you can watch and learn from. Start watching some NBA games to get a feel for the game.

Well, it matters where you're trying to get on the team. If you want on the team at a huge school, you'd better be a 6'6 guy who's been playing your whole life. I started playing when I was 9 and played varsity 2 years at a smaller school, and I'm not really talented at all.
I'd say though, if you started playing at the age of 13 and worked really hard, in two years you could be good enough to play for a lot of teams assuming you've got a moderate amount of talent.
