If you are literally uninstalling your current antivirus to install some other, you might wish to. It never hurts to be cautious. As soon as you get your new antivirus installed, get back on line and update it.

No. If you unplug the internet connection the antivirus will not be upgraded. As Robert said, there is no need to do that. As long as you don't go online to download another antivirus. Download the new one, but don't install it until the first one is uninstalled. That way, you don't risk a possible infection however slight the chance there is that you'll get your computer infected while downloading a new antivirus program. There is such a thing as being too cautious.

I usually download the new one, uninstall the old, reboot and install the new.
As long as you don't open email or surf the internet before installing the new AV, there is little chance of getting infected.
