"Through history, Imperial Russa was far more successful than today's Russian Federation."

Sort of a shot in the dark as to a thesis for my senior research paper. Please be brutal, I'm in AP English.

Imperial Russia lasted from (Tsar Michael Romanov)1515 until 1917. The Russian Federation has lasted since 1990(?) So your shot in the dark must compare the successes and failures of each. The Tsars pushed Russia to the Pacific Ocean and claimed Siberia. Imperial Russia also claimed the Principality of Georgia.

In high school and college, I was always told that a thesis should also briefly outline HOW you are going to prove your point, not just what you are going to prove. For example, if you have a few main supporting points/examples that prove that Imperial Russia was more successful, like "Imperial Russia was more successful at keeping crime rates down, providing employment, and blah, blah, blah." (I'm making those reasons up, of course). Try being a little more specific about what main points of evidence you will use to support your claim that Imperial Russia was more successful. Good luck!

Successful in what? Neither Imperial Russia, Soviet Russia, or Federated Russia has achieved the premiere Russian goal. A warm water port.

PS Probably more successful in maintaining order, though.

Sevastapol, in Crimea is a warm water port.
I think it's in Ukraine now, but Russia has several Black Sea ports.

Kalinograd, on the Baltic rarely ices up, I hear.

I agree with jonmcn49 - add a word to the topic, whether it's "economically," "politically," "socially," etc., and put it in between "successful" and "than." Maybe you could even drop the intro phrase "Through history" - that's sort of implied with the use of "today's."

Just an idea - others may disagree. But I think it helps narrow the focus and slant of your paper. But remember that when you pick a point (thesis), be sure to defend it. Good luck. : )

Crooked Timber: Putin's speech : I just read the transcript of Putin’s speech following the murders in Beslan. In it, Putin expresses nostalgia for the old USSR. Obviously it is intended for a domestic audience and plays to their concerns and expectations. What should we make of the following passage? And who are the “they” of the penultimate paragraph below?

Today we are living in conditions which have emerged following the break-up of a vast great state, a state which unfortunately turned out to be unable to survive in the context of a rapidly changing world. But despite all the difficulties, we have managed to preserve the core of the colossus which was the Soviet Union.

And we called the new country the Russian Federation. We all expected changes, changes for the better. But we have turned out to be absolutely unprepared for much that has changed in our lives…

No it is not.
