Just wondering, my check engine light is on, and the break fluid looks pretty low. Would the car shut the engine off if the break fluid got to low to protect it self ?

If the brake fluid it low then it would cause the brake light to turn on, not the check engine light, the check engine light needs to be looked at by a mechanic, The car needs to be hooked up to a scan tool to pull a code(s) of why the check engine light it on. I recomend taking it to a garage instead of a parts store, because a scan tool is just that, a tool, nothing more then a wrench or socket, from the code that the scan tool brings up, you still have to diagnose why the code came up, all the scan tool does it give the mechanic a place to start.

No that is very odd. The check engine light is on for a different reason. The brake fluid can be low for several reasons. 1) you could have a problem with the brakes. 2) The pads or shoes have worn in. 3) A line or master cylinder could be leaking.
I would advise filling the master cylinder up. Make sure you do use the correct brake fluid for the car. Should say the type on cap or owners manual. Keep an eye on the fluid. If you still lose fluid, then it's time to take it in. Also are you having problems with the brakes? Hard too stop or soft pedal? That should tell you if something is wrong. But something should have lit up on the dashboard telling you to check the brakes. Hard to tell as you did not say what year or make or model of vehicle.

The check engine light means to check ALL your fluid levels. And what ever you are low on from oil to the brake fluid, your vehicle will continue to run until it seizes up from lack of oil or you hit someone cuz your brakes failed. If you plan to keep your car and do light maitenance on it, go to one of the Auto stores and you can buy a Haye's Book, of your car model and it will give you all the symptoms and diagnosis how to do it.

on newer cars yes 2000 and up and if your brake fluid is low you may have some air in the brake lines. you should bleed your brakes and check to see if your master cylinder is in good shape.
