Ok, I recently bought a laptop from a guy. However, after using the computer for one week, I discovered that it's basically a piece of crap. Therefore, I was wondering how I'd be able to void the check so that he couldn't cash it.

Call your bank. It has been a week maybe he has already cashed your check. In that case try to make recovery in small claims court.

No to void a check you write VOID on the check before you give it to someone. What you mean is to do a Stop Payment. Unless he made any written representation to you about the quality of the laptop, i think you're stuck with this purchase.

You have to go into your bank and fill out some paperwork to Stop Payment on a check. It usually costs about $20 to do so.

When doing a bank stop, there has to be a valid reason - sounds like you're covered..but, you'll also need to return the computer if you don't pay for it. Will he not work with you?

Did you screw up? Well you need to talk to the bank on that one. If he has cashed it and not deposited in his bank account just count your money good bye. When you ever buy anything, if you do not have a written warranty you are screwed.
