Art projects are great, they really get your creative juices flowing and if you are doing it at home you wont be influenced by others work or have your work copied so I say 'yes' to your question.

Art is something that often needs a lot of practice to bring out your best. Consider this; if you are enrolled in an art class, you are likely there by your own choice. I think more important is that since you "enrolled" in the class that you should commit to it and do what ever it takes to do well in it, it will help to mold you into a reliable/dependable person, which is a trait almost every employer is looking for, and it just might make you a better artist.

I enjoy drawing and painting classes but have decided to switch over to the college and gallery system because of the poor quality of instruction where I presently go. Lots of books and sites on the web available. I visit the gallery twice a month and watch shows, like to paint in my spare time. A favourite hobby along with cooking and occasionally writing. Prefer prose, essays and journalism. Looking at a degree in history right now, with a Master's afterwards.
