We could have 9 as of now, and the smallest isn't Pluto. Ceres is a likely candidate to be a planet. Ceres is the largest asteroid in the solar system, soon to be the smallest planet.

According to the International Astronomical Union we have 8. If we accept Pluto as a planet you have to count Ceres and Eris in too so that gives us 11 (weird I know but kinda cool). We've discovered over 200 planets that orbit stars other than our Sun.

Well, personally, I still count Pluto. And what about Sedna? Announced a couple of years ago as the 10th planet, it completely dropped off everyone's radar since.

Technically eight but some people still consider Pluto a planet and if that is the case, then nine.
