They couldn't handle our atmosphere and diseases. I believe it was the simple germs that killed them off. The old version was a little more believable on this I think.....At least as far as I can remember

BACTERIA, not viruses. In the book as well as both movies, but the original 1953 version was far superior to the Spielberg/Tom Cruise action vehicle. What humans had developed a resistance to, the aliens had zero tolerance for and after so many days, they all died out, naturally.
"The Martians had no resistance to the bacteria in our atmosphere to which we have long since become immune. Once they had breathed our air, germs, which no longer affect us, began to kill them. The end came swiftly. All over the world, their machines began to stop and fall. After all that men could do had failed, the Martians were destroyed and humanity was saved by the littlest things, which God, in His wisdom, had put upon this Earth."
...one of the best written epilogues ever.

First off H.G. Wells wrote the book over 100 years ago, some 30 years before moving pictures were created, not movies, I mean moving pictures. In the book, as in all of the adaptations of the book the alians always die due to exposure to viruses due to an immune system which wasn't developed for our planet. Wells always liked irony in his books.

the aliens died by the natural resoorces in the world like bugs and little things 4rom the plants hope that helps

on the older version it was germs.something us humans that got used to and was immunized against >... I have yet to watch the one with tom cruise

when they killed us to drink our blood.. they took in all our diseases and germs... the aliens werent immune to it.. so it started to kill them off and/or weakened them.
