In the UK you are certainly entitled to you money back - assuming the items is faulty / broken as supplied - and not because you dropped it down the stairs!
Not sure about other countriers but would be surprised if much different,
If they disagree, ask to speak to the manager - then ask him if he wishes to explain to head office why trading standards have had to be called in. If a sole-prop, then just tell them that you will contact trading standards.
In the UK, even displaying a notice saying "no refunds" etc is actually a crimnal offence.

The law doesn't really say anything about the subject because store credit wasn't around when most laws were written but it is wrong if it was bought broken the problem with this is the store might think you have broke it since buying it but if this has happened to you complain as publicly as possible they'll probably give you a refund just to shut you up ,alternatively why dont you just use the store credit to get an unbroken version of the item
So in short it is legal but there are a few ways round the problem

It depends on their return policy. If the policy is clearly displayed in the store.. check near the register, on the incoming and out going doors and your receipt.. you have no recourse. If the item was broken and you returned it without a receipt it's policy that you only get a store credit. This is because there are so many people out there that rip off the chain stores these days by bringing items back that they bought a year ago.. or that weren't even bought at that chain of stores. Or some even break the item and then return it because they are in need of the cash.
If you had your receipt and the store policy says you can get a cash refund.. go for it.

Did you have a receipt from the store? Was it an item that was sold "as is?" There's lots of reasons stores will only give store credit. That's why you should make sure you're familiar with the return policy of any place you shop. Good luck!

It is legal. It depends on the stores policy. There is no way for them to know if it was broken when you got it.. or not..
Im sorry!

Sure, it's legal, Santa, if you waited too long to return it and don't have a receipt. That's usually about 30 days.

I think it depends on the store. If you have your receipt you should get your money back though.

if you broke it, consider yourself lucky you're getting anything at all!! but if it was defective when you purchase it, it's up to the store manager what kind of refund you get. especially if it's electronics.

I believe that their only legal obligation is an even exchange for undamaged merchandise.
