I'm up here in Niagara Falls, and right now we don't need A/C this time of year, although today it was about 45 and rainy. But I would ask your neighbors, co-workers, even the local BBB. Look for someone who has been in business for a while, and that they are certified. Also, look for ones that are associated with ASHRAE, RSES, or trade organizations.

HVAC repair people often put their sticker on a machine they recently fixed. You might check your neighbor's machines to see if they have a sticker. If so, you might check with the residents of the home and ask them what they think.

One other idea is to call the local tech school. The instructor might be able to either recommend someone or send himself and a student to repair it. That's how the kids learn. They work really cheap.

Jollygree provided you with a great answer. In Florida you may have a 'heat pump' instead of a central air conditioner. Call an experienced HVAC company.
