I once wrote a screenplay and i wrestled with the question of how intelligent it would seem with all the cussing that was in it. It's true that instead of using a cuss word there's always a more precise word that make a more valid point, however there is also something to the simplicity of the F word when your characters back is against the wall. There is an implied rebelliousness in the use of cuss (or curse, whatever) words. They can be used very well in painting anti-heroes, and maybe if you like to see yourself as an honest down to earth no bs kinda person who will kick somebody's behind if they mess with you and yours, then maybe you will start cussing.
Also, it's always shocking and a little funny to see people who never cuss suddenly, scream out "Eff this Ess".
Ha ha classic.

Cursing is a habit. A very bad habit I feel but a habit.
My 16 year old feels it is grown up to curse, he will not talk to me if he chooses to curse. I personally will not tolerate my own, cursing in day to day language.

I personally feel the person doing the cursing could be intelligent and should be able to get there point across without using fowl ugly language.

I curse when I am hurt, pain seams to bring out the worst in me so I am in no way perfect! Of course certain words have been deemed cursing when put in context are not cursing at all (a female dog is what__. A male child who does not know who there father is is a ____, another word for a donkey is a ____ etc. etc.), though taken out of context dose not make sense and therefor at the present time of using the word that person does not appear to be very intelligent...
Some of the children of today appear to me to not have much intelligence. The English language is a confusing one and Lord knows I have my spelling and grammar problems but WOW what I see on these boards is more then just English slang words such as peeps. Clearly there are people on these boards who need to go back to school, starting with elementary school.
Though I have ran into very smart intelligent peeps who did not even know how to read (this person I am thinking of sold a very profitable business and is the leader in his industry, but has reading problems). I would be very surprised if I ever herd him curse!!
So the way I see it, the more these curing people are on the computer or around those who do not curse, they themselves will learn not to curse so much....
My thoughts...

I have some intelligent friends that cuss alot. I think sometimes it's just frustration...nothing to do with someones intelligence. Heck, I've had a leading Wall Street Exec give a tour to my class and she cussed like crazy. Intelligent but geeze!

Cussing is a dialect of english, it an abbreviated language. People who cuss are usually trying to get their point across without wasting time. I had to learn to cuss after graduating high school because some people don't understand much outside this kind of dialect(or refuse to converse quickly without it).

Yes. They are not saying actually what they mean. They use the cuss word instead of saying ( that hurts my feelings or that makes me angry when you do that or I don't like that behavior.) It is a gross way of communication and lacks intelligence and dignity. It is just a bad habit and in the mode of ignorance.

One is not related to the other. It's a matter of choice and expression.

And your question should be written "Those who swear a lot show a lack of intelligence," or "Swearing indicates a lack of intelligence."

Yes and No. It is not a lack of intelligence because there are intelligent people who swear but rather it is a waste of intelligence. This is not to say that the people who prefer to use minor swear words are wasting his or her intelligence but rather the people who have vulgar, four letter words coming out of his or her mouth every other word is a waste of intelligence.
