Our job newsletter started in September 2006 and next month will be our 5 edition. Being that its a new year is it now time to start a new volume (vol 2), or should we continue with volume 1.

Put as many as you want. It's your newsletter, but I would suggest that you start the new edition with the new year. It's just about timing.

Editions do not constitute Volumes. A Volume is a description of a single book that is one of several, which (together) constitute a body of work on an ongoing theme. The work as a whole may consist of five volumes (5 single books published all at once, as a single work). It may consist of ten books but the definition remains the same.

An Edition is the descriptive word for the demarkation of a run of print: it sets the time when a single work (that may be made up of only one book, or many volumes) was printed. Thus there can be a First Edition (said to be) Printed July, 1999, a Second Edition (a whole other printing job) Printed, September 2000--and so on. There is no set number to how many Editions of a work there may be: it depends entirely on public demand (saleability).
Edition and Volume words that describe different aspects of the finished product of published works.

No, it is not time for a new volume. Volume 2 would begin in September 2007.

Yeah, but then you'll have to start a new volume at new years next year so.... I would go on with the first volume until as many months you want a volume to last.Or until september next year. I dont know its your choice. You could start a new volume every 10 months or (if you start at new year) every 4 months. Choose wat you want :-)
