The semantic problem you're dealing has two issues:
1. "Pop" is not a form of music, it is a production and marketing technique.
2. Although many "Punk" musicians and fans are rebellioius by nature, there is nothing in the musical form that REQUIRES rebellion. There are some punk artists that have become popular because they have chosen to write songs with accesible lyrics and mellowed sound. That doesn't make them un-punk.

Well , then it's mainstream pop punk then. Ya can't argue, punk has become something that it never should have been. It was meant to be a rebellion of the establishment, and once the so called establishment backlashes and embraces it, the whole point becomes quite moot.

YES! I've been saying this for years. It doesn't make any sense at all. "Pop punk" is more of a reference to complete tools that make similar-sounding music to get famous. I can't think of any other reason for that nonsensical label.
There aren't many true punk bands left. Punk doesn't necessarily account for the way the music sounds so much as it is the personality of the band itself. I think that Mindless Self Indulgence is the last true punk band. They caught their record label in a breach of contract and started doing things on their own (although I think they're on a new label now). How many bands catch their label in breach of contract??

yes! pop punk is a nonexisitent category, it s only prpose is so the bands can feel that they still have "street cred", even though they don't. Their are still ture punk bands out there though, they're just indie, and arent neccesaily just the sound.

well, now its redundant. Punk has gone to the preps and people who "stick it to the man". The old, good, stuff is gone. Now we're stuck with the crappy stuff. Too bad Strummer is dead.
