Butane comes in "Blue" bottles and Propane comes in "Orange" bottles - both do same job i.e. portable gas energy supply where natural gas is not available - however Propane has a much lower freezing point which is ideal for storing the bottles outside of property.

Butane - C4H10
Propane - C3H8

Butane is contained at a lower pressure than propane - ie it liquefies at a lower pressure. Propane gives a hotter flame and is better for use where the bottle is exposed to low temperatures eg. outdoors, as it has a lower boiling point.

Never use propane on a butane appliance and vice versa unless they are dual fuel.

Kind of. About the same BTU's. If your stove says it will work with either, go for it. You need the right regulator. The gas fittings are different for each cylinder's. If your stove will work with either not the differences between the two: Butane don't work at freezing. If winter camping, no butane.
