The problem may lie with how Firefox is connecting to the internet and don't ask me why but Firefox is prone to altering settings without warning, especially if it crashed on you. Assuming you connect directly to the internet and not via a network or proxy, go to Tools>Options>General>connection settings (the exact location of "connection
settings" may differ...)
select "direct connection to the internet"

Hope this helps; may not be a bad idea to to clear out the browser cache as suggested earlier. If these tips all fail, then look at your Firewall settings.

If IE will still work then maybe your Firewall is blocking FireFox. If you have System Rerstore, try going back to a point before it started failing.

does your internet explorer display web pages? if not, you don't have an internet connection

if so, it might be that you setup your firefox to go through a proxy server when you dont' have one. that's under options, under tools.
