My computer is less than a year old, and the disc drive hasn't been used that much. Lately, it has been reading CDs, but not DVDs (blank or otherwise) it states that the drive is empty when it is a DVD format disc in there. I have tried reinstalling the original software , and updating the software with updates off of the internet, but it's still not reading? Anything else I should try before I pay an arm and a leg to have it sent to Timbuctu for repairs? Normally, I would assume that the disc drive has somehow been disconnected, but for the fact that it reads CDs fine...?

Yes, it is a DVD/CD writer/reader...and it has read DVDs in the past, both true DVDs and copies.

ok, on the front of the drive door itself, it will say CD-ROM, but if it does not say DVD, then it cannot read DVDs, meaning that you need a DVD drive if you want it to read DVDs...a CD drive can ONLY READ CDs, hence a CD drive..so all in all, unless it just started not reading DVDs and it read them before, then there is something wrong with your laser...if not, then you need a DVD drive and you only have a CD ROM drive

The best thing to do is to put an original DVD disc ( not copies, not bootleg or anything) and try different DVD discs, if it doesn't read it then your drive might not be DVD-rom, if it is then that means your drive doesn't work anymore.

Usually this happens when you have an internet connection and download some programs/software and it attacks the DVD-rom or CD-rom drive and rending it unusable.

sounds like it's a CD drive, not a DVD one. if it just started doing this, then I don't know. if it's always been like this, then it may just have a CD drive instead of a DVD one.

Are you sure you have a DVD drive? Look at the front of your drive and make sure it says "DVD".

you can solve your problem with this idea:
pick up some money, go to the shop, then buy a DVD Rom for your pc!
after installing the DVD Rom to your pc, you can play back any DVD on it!

click on MY COMPUTER, then check "Devices With Removable Storage", does it say DVD(*:) [the * is your drive alphabetical identifier]. if it says (for example) CD(D:), then you only have a CD drive. it should say (for example) DVD(D:)
