It’s not nice
Nail biting is a disastrous habit. It’s almost normal to do it when young, in school or even college. But once you reach the age of 20, you should really stop biting your nails.
Some statistics show that almost 20 per cent of adults bite their nails all the time, while most of us, girls especially, have episodes of nail-biting from time to time.
Nail biting is usually connected with nervousness, stress, impatience and boredom while physical look of the nails can be a trigger too. That means when you damage or brake your nail, you are most certain to bite it, in order to smooth it out (sounds familiar?)
It’s very difficult to resist the habit and the temptation, but we’d like to help with some tips and tricks, all in order to maintain your beautiful nails beautiful.
It’s important to realise how do you actually start biting your nails. Do you cup you hand or examine your nails? Once you recognise the pre-nail-biting behaviour, stop it. One of the best ways to do this is to keep your hands occupied. You can grab an armrest, hold the pencil more firmly or just gently grab your knee.
File your nails straight across, preferably with an emery board. Buy a cuticle cream and make the skin surrounding your nails soft and healthy. Coat your nails in lemon juice or pepper sauce when at home. In fact, any bitter, foul testing substance will do (Beware not to put your fingers near your eyes!). You can wear thin cotton gloves as well.
Get rid of stress, exercise, practice yoga or listen to relaxing music. Make your nails and hands attractive and well maintained. Polish them, use moisturising cream and wear jewellery. A great guide on keeping nails neat and attractive can be found in our How to have great nails

Hey Alli,
A great way to stop biting your nails is to constantly remind yourself that if you do, then your nails look revolting. Or you put fake nails on that are unbiteable. Another thing you can do is to stop looking at your nails and whenever you feel the need to crunch, crunch on chips or an apple. Remember that it won't do you any good if you bite - squeezing a small pillow or Play-Doh also helps you put off the need to munch.

put hot pepper sauce on them, just don't rub your eyes either. Really you will have to make a habit of something else. something positive like everytime you bite your nails get up and clean something. Make it a rule. you might get tired of that and stop biting them if they are busy doing other things, like writing 20 times I must not bite my nails. Every time you do it. Good luck.

I cured myself and my hubby of nail biting by this method ( 30 + yrs each). Start with one nail and dont bite that one nail. Bite all the rest as usual. Keep that one filed smooth until it grows out. Then dont bite another nail...that makes two you dont bite until that one also grows out. Keep going like this until you only have one nail left that you bite. You will be mostly cured then as your other nails will look so good that you will leave that one alone too. I have tried everything else and this way is the only way that works....same with hubby and we bit our nails until they bled for years. Good luck.

Stick your fingers in something revolting... and then think of it being under your nails the next time you have the urge to bite.

Soak your fingers in vinegar (unless you LIKE it) and tell yourself how revolting it is and tell yourself no one else does it. Try not to do it unconsiously, my friend had this habit. Every time she started to bite them, all of her friends and i would yell "FINGERS" maybe that would help. DON"T put nail polish on, it makes it worse.

I was a chronic nail biter. I had tips put on years ago and I've never bitten them since. Mind you I'm still having tips put on them all these years later.
