Before electricity and appliances, people would hang their stockings by the fire to dry over night. In Germany they started a tradition of putting gifts or treats in the stockings on Christmas Day, purportedly from Santa Claus. If a chid was bad, instead of gifts or a treat, he got only a dirty lump of coal.

Come'on, it is to scare your kids!!!! Once they figure out stockings are full of coal, they will be good all year!!! You can use the power of Santa against them all year long. Haven't you seen the commercial TLC?
