Also, what if the movie's story was written by the director? Books are being made into movies more frequently now, so d'you think it would make the big screens without having a big book title as well?

Films are changing rapidly with different ideas on how to get it to the big screen.
Best way to get it to the big screen with out the famous stars is to make a film that everyone talks about before it is made.
Marketing and PR and of course writing a best seller as you mentioned.

Watch out for my film being released soon called Anticipation, it's a film everyone is waiting for.

Oft accused of being of being overly patriotic - too BRITISH than is seemly or sensible - I'd love to choose Caine, Hopkins, Hurt, Niven, Finney, Grant, Sellers, Mason, Firth, Sher, Jacobi, Laurie, Oldman - amongst MANY Brits who I think have had 'great careers' on screen'. NOT a random list - I've never rated Olivier, Guinness, Mills, Attenborough and others as 'especially good' actors - but then I'm bit of a picky fuss-pot when it comes to 'acting'. And therefore hope to be taken (fairly) seriously - in nominating Johnny Depp as best of the bunch - the actor I think 'has it all' - and is still young enough to do a whole lot more. Haven't seen all his films - but he seems to have covered a very wide range of roles, periods, characters, etc in a remarkable 'chameleon' sort of way - with consummate ease, as if acting's a breeze - and he is 'unto the manner born'. ; )))

Sometimes it's possible for an indie film to hit it big after receiving acclaim at a major film festival to make it to the big screen. It may be on the rare side, but it does happen.

as mentioned before The Blair Witch Project is one of the ultimate examples of this. The indy film scene is where these types of films are supposed to originate. I just wish it was easier for these movies to be viewed. My answer is yes, and I hope to see more of them.

Was Sean Connery always famous?
Everything by Kevin Smith was written and directed, and did I mention M. Night Shyamalan?
Okay, 'nuff said.

It's been done - Despite having some significant credits under his belt, Harrison Ford was not readily known before the Star Wars series (nor was anyone else who co-starred).

Yes, thats how they discover most stars, by finding them in little production and passing them on. The little organizations help the big one.they need each other. And yeah, about the book thing.

Look at Blair Witch Project, it was absolutely huge, had no budget and no stars.
