If you mix silver nitrate and sodium chloride you get silver chloride which is a precipitate and is light sensitive. It is mixed with a gel and put on film. If you mix the 2 chemicals and leave it in the light you will see the color change.

AgNO3 + NaCl---> AgCl (s)+ NaNO3

one of them is the siver halide crystals having enough light to absorb and how fas it will absorb (the larger the crystal the less light it needs)
