You utilize muscle energy to push the pencils together. I think when you attempt to seperate them, you must relax one set of muscles and use the other and there is a time lapse or it may be because your muscles somewhat lock and do not want to reverse action. I don't really know...

It's the same priciple as standing in a doorway and pressing the back of you hands against the jambs. When you walk away your arms raise. It's just your muscles relaxing slower than you think they should.
