Don't know where regerrugged lives, but around here they put a smelly component in all gas, LP or natural. The only way to convert your heater to LP from Nat. gas is to check with the manufacturer to see if there is a conversion kit available for that model. It will probably consist of a new orifice for the burner jet and instructions. They typically cost less than $10 if it's available.

Natural gas has mercapton added to it by the gas utility. It has an unpleasant smell, so you will know if gas or fumes are building up in a room or in a house.

Propane has no odor. If you got unburned propane or carbon monoxide in the room, you would not know it. Only use propane with a propane heater and make sure it is a vented system.
