you need to do it in layers.. top middle bottom
don't look at the cube as 6 faces. the cube has 3 layers. the top and bottom layers have 9 pieces, and the middle has 8 pieces.
start with the top layer, arrange all 9 pieces so you have a solid color on top and the corner and side pieces ahve the right side color as well, then the middle, then the bottom layer, that's the trick.

Well, you can go to rubiks.com, I think there you can find a solution booklet online, it's easy to understand because it gives you the exact steps you have to take to solve it. Good luck.
