I am moving to the US and want a basic bank to deal with, they all seem to charge crazy amounts a month just to provide basic service - as opposed to Europe where I am living now!!!

Check out Washington Mutual. Everything should be free for all the basic items.

Lots of banks don't charge for the basic services.

i use chase bank and they offer free services if you have a monthly direct deposit (i think most banks offer that). for my savings account i use the online bank www.emigrantdirect.com for a decently high interest rate (currently 5.05%). it's also free with no minimum balance.

I use Bank of America. There're pretty reasonable!
