Stories that involve blood, gore, and natural disasters get the highest tv ratings and sell more newspapers. My brother works in Iraq as an electrician on the American military bases and he sends me stories from there about the schools and hospitals being rebuilt, road improvements, and increasing electrical power available for the Iraqi people. These stories won't sell American newspapers or get the high ratings on tv so they are ignored by the journalists over there. They are sure to show the blood in the street after every bombing incident and ied explosion along the roads.

News is about providing a context which increases sales of their advertisers' products. So they hype the bad stuff, you feel lousy, you are subconsciously more receptive to the happy 'solutions' offered by the advertised wares. (Works even better if you're not aware that it's happening, btw.)
There's also been some horrifying work done on how politicians use terrorism threats and other negative news to convince us that we need their protection and thus keep them in power.
Yes, the world would be better served. But where's the money in that?

People love the gore and unhappiness in news. That's what the news organization believes!! Listen, I gave up my TV because of the news!!
I couldn't take it anymore. Only sensationalism, not real facts. The news is there like some scary movie - to scare the "*&*t out of you. Keeps you on the straight and narrow. Makes you lock your door and suspect your neighbors who look different.

Sure, I think the world would be more pleasant, but I don't believe that news organizations control what is happening in the world; rather they just report what happens through the lens that they would like viewers to see it in.
