If I had to pick just one, it would be music. It's universal, and no language barrier exists as there is for literature, etc. Art might come in a close second, but I think Music tops it.

Literature. Art is very good but it has to deal more with emotions and expressing them. Music also is a nice emotional release and can be used very well in expressing emotion. But literature can start revolutions, attack injustices, and bring us more to the type of life we believe is rightfully ours (a peaceful orderly existence where everyone is equal).

But now that I think about it, I would argue that all three are needed. Art shows us what we should shoot for (or avoid), literature tells us how we should go for it, and music gives us the fight to keep going until we attain it. Imagine if we had never had Picasso's Guernica, if we would still want to change things as much as we did after having seen it. Or to question Stalin (who was being praised during WW2 just as much in America as he was in the Soviet Union) might not have come as quickly if we did not have Orsen Welles Animal Farm. Few things stir up emotion and love for one's fellow man like a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. And I would venture to guess that is true of any National Anthem.

I consider all the arts therefore to be needed, each one supports the other in our quest for perfection.

Philosophy, because it is such a broad subject that you can literally take anything to do with the arts and apply it to philosophy. Music has a philosophy. Literature has a philosophy. Just about everyone has some type of philosophy of life, even if they are aware of it or not. So, I say philosophy.
