2 years is about middle-aged for a betta. Properly cared for, they can live 3-5 years in captivity. However, they usually don't make it that long because they are often kept in unfiltered bowls / small tanks without filters, which shortens their lifespans.

In the wild, it's more like 6-8 years.

What exactly is your betta doing? Always be sure to keep his water clean (if you have him in a small jar without filter, replace 50% of the water every other day with a clean turkey baster - if he has a filter, clean 30% once a week). Make sure the water is warm - get a small heater if your tank is big enough; otherwise, keep the room warmer or move the tank near a lamp.
Only feed 1-2 pellets, twice a day, and don't feed one day a week to keep bloating away.
If he has other symptoms like white spots (ich) or fuzzy stuff (fungus), specific treatment may be in order.

I used to have tropical fish in a 29 gallon tank, and I had a clown loach who lived to be over eight years old. I would think if your Beta were living under optimal conditions, it might be possible for him to live that long as well. I would make sure that his tank or bowl is kept clean so that he has oxygenated water at all times. As far as feeding, a small amount of food once a day is optimal to prevent overfeeding and bloat. Does he have spots on him or anything like that or is he just not eating? You might want to go to a local pet store or aquarium store and enquire as to what you could maybe add to the water to correct what symptoms he may be having. Good luck!

Normally betta fish live to be 2-5 years old, but some betta fishes live to be nearly 8 years old. However, when purchasing from a pet store, it is not always possible to know how old the fish is when you take it home. Male bettas living in laboratories with large individual tanks and daily exercise have lived 10 years or longer.

If properly taken care of, bettas will live at least 5 years. Many people even have bettas older then 5. I have a friend who has had a betta for 9 years now. It has been in a 10 gallon tank with neon tetras.

Your betta could be reaching the end of his life, or he could last longer. When they age they get kind of humpbacked. They tend to become less active, sometimes less aggressive. Check him for obvious signs of illness, and other than that, I would just hope for the best.

mine lived for almost exactly two years. i think that is the average age. towards the end of his life, it seemed like this red stuff was comin out of his gills. not blood, but tissue seemed to be poking out. does your fish have that? does his stamina seem to be slowing down? these questions may point you to the answerd
