I don't think there was ever a tradition of giving coal to a child. A better solution would be to not give them anything for Christmas.

What Grinch of a parent would give coal to their kids for Christmas? Sounds to me like you should have a talk with your mom and dad cause you might be the only one to have ever gotten coal for Christmas. I'd hit them up for the gifts they owe you while your at it. Seeing how coal isn't exactly something you can go to the super market or department store for you think maybe one could substitute a charcoal briquette? On second thought that would be a moronic thing to do giving a bad kid a charcoal briquette so he can burn the house down lol.

Well it's coal in the first place, not cole.
This was never a tradition either. It's just a saying to get children to act better.

If you tried to give your kid coal for Christmas today, the kid would report you to DYFUS because you hurt his little feelings and then you would go to jail.

Hello =)
The Chinese get it now, to fuel their industrialization.
Bad boys who don't know how to spell COAL get COLE SLAW in their stockings, however....
Why, when I was a boy, we used to sleep outside in winter, to stay warm.--it was so cold in our house. We used to intentionally be bad, so we'd GET COAL, in our stockings......otherwise, PA'd just burn our toys in the potbelly stove anyway....
Sheesh....
Namaste, and Happy Holidays...
