The Simpsons seem to live all over the place. Since I live in Portland, I like to think it's Springfield, Oregon. Matt Groening is originally from Eugene, Oregon which is right next to Springfield, OR. Also, many characters in the show are named after places in Portland and Eugene.

In the official Simpson's Episode guide it states that in the Behind the Laughter episode, Kentucky was revealed to be Springfield's state.

I believe a good number of states actually have a city of Springfield, they chose that name because it basically could be a city anywhere in the U.S., but I have heard that something relating to the state of Oregon since Matt Groening has connections there.

They never tell you. It's kind of a running gag. Someone will always speak up when someone is about to say the state, or will be standing in front of the map of the US when the teacher is pointing to Springfield.

This particular Springfield has a nuclear plant, because that is where Homer works. I don't think any of the Springfields has one.

i used to think it took place in washington when i was a little kid. but im not sure what state they live in. the show never really said. there was a few times they were aboutt o say the state but said something else like when marge was on the phone giving them the adress "springfield ohiya mod!!" lolbecause she naw the neighbors wife
