Should I move my family to denver? Help!?

I LIVE IN ALABAMA NOW AND I CAN'T STAND THE HEAT OR THE HURRICANCES. PLUS THERE IS NOTHING TO DO AND THE CRIME IS SUPER HIGH. I HAVE A 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT MOVING TO DENVER NEXT YEAR? IS THERE A LOT TO DO IN DENVER? WHERE IN DENVER SHOULD I MOVE? IS CRIME HIGH THERE? ARE THE SCHOOLS NICE? WHAT DAYCARES ARE GOOD? ARE THERE MEDICAL ASSISTING JOBS? THERE ARE SO MANY QUESTIONS THAT I WANT TO ASK!!! I REALLY AM CONSIDERING MOVING THERE WITH MY BF AND DAUGHTER, BUT I REALLY CAN'T FIND ANY INFORMATION ONLINE ABOUT DENVER. HELP! THANK YOU!

I am a native Denverite and I can't imagine living anywhere else. If you have a family then you probably want to check out the suburbs. The city of Denver is nice but the schools are not well-funded, there's not a lot of families so there's not a terribly family-friendly environment.

The suburbs are a lot safer--but they are also more expensive. I'd recommend Littleton and Lakewood--western Denver suburbs. Schools are good, property values are decent, plenty of jobs are moving out of the city into the suburbs, and there's no hurricanes.

Most of the metro area is pretty conservative. We're kind of "midwesternly"--big of church and family. If that's you then I think you'll be quite welcome here wherever you move.

And just a small piece of advice. Definately marry your boyfriend before you come here. You don't want to get stuck in a far-away city after you get dumped. Plus, like I said, we're big on marriage and family life here.

I think that people make a couple of big mistakes when thinking about Denver.

First, they think we're all a bunch of ski-'til-you-drop cowboys who ride mules into work. Many of us don't ski at all and cowboys are a rarity. Most of us drive SUVs, not our trusty steeds.

Second, people think we're all dope-smoking ex-hippies who like Starbucks and Dave Matthews about as much as we love granola and tofu. We do like granola here--but a more conservative mix of it.

Here is some irony for you I too am from Alabama and have moved to Colorado. It is a great state most people are nice and the weather isn't as bad as everyone down south thinks it is. A helpful site might be the one for the Rocky Mountain News. There are plenty of great things to do all over the stae from ancient indian ruins to train rides and rodeos. Denver has a GREAT zoo. I have three kids and they enjoy the zoo, the butterfly pavillion, amusement parks and science and nature center which are all in Denver. Crime is pretty low for a city the size of Denver. I had to move to thw western side of Colorado for my hubbie's job but did live around Denver for a couple of years and the only complaint I had was that the cost of living was really high.

I moved to Denver about 6 years ago and well quite frankly it is a decent city to live in. As far as Aurora goes, it is known as the ghettos of Denver, by the locals. Rent is cheap, and it is very close to Denver downtown. If you are looking for more upscale locations, I would suggest Cherry Creek,or Westminster. It is a little more pricier than Aurora for sure, but then again it is safe and the school district is grea for your daughter. (Aurora doesn't have a good education system-relatively)
The Cherry Creek is in the heart of the city with an upscale mall called, you guessed it, Cherry Creek Mall. Westminster is a city that I moved to starting a new family. It is a little pricey, butit is quiet and it is safe with a good education system as well.
Since you are a medical assistant, the city will have positions in small offices and also the local hospitals. You should search www.denverpost.com.... They will have a good match for your needs! Last note, ---FYI Fort Collins was rated best city to live in by yahoo last year. It is about an hour away from Denver....

(Like Alabama, Denver is alot of white people but doesnt have as much blacks- but many Mexicans. There are a few Asians here and there--like me~~~!)

we moved here to Castle rock. Co.(30 minutes south of Denver ) from N.J. 15 years ago. Wish we would have moved here sooner Metro denver is a great place to live and raise kids. Go to http://www.townofcastlerock.org to get an idea what Colorado is all about. PS, don't worry about the blizzard thing only happens once every 3-5 years and the roads for the most part are clear and dry and plenty of sunshine . over 300 days a year

I moved to Denver 5 years ago. Everyone has a "magic place" This has definately been mine. I work as a Medical Assistant in a local hospital. Lots of medical jobs available. Great night life, and even more things to do in the day time. I love the small town feel in the way that people are so friendly and easy to meet here, while having the amenities of a larger city. We have lots of government programs for day care, rec centers etc, charter schools available and one of the best transportation systems in the country.

My son and his family live in Aurora, a suburb of Denver. The sun shines most of the time; there is wonderful shopping, restaurants; the mountains are close by. The schools in Aurora are great; there are nice parks, professional sports; great movie theaters, skating rinks, swimming. Wonderful place to live. I wish it wasn't so nice there - maybe he and his family would move back home.
