I bought my son a Nintendo DS Lite for Christmas and already wrapped it. What type of batteries does it take or does it come with rechargable? Thanks for answering, if it is rechargable, I need to open in and charge it. Happy Holidays.

As stated, it's a lithium battery. Here's a FAQ for the battery that comes with the unit.

Initial charge takes about three hours.

it's rechargeable, and it already comes with the batteries inside + the charger. (the batteries are inside the DS so don't bother opening it)

Litium Rechargable
You get about 500 charges if you manage the battery use well.

It is rechargeable and preferrably should be charged overnight before initial use.
