Don't know for sure, but I could imagine that a positive or negative spike in electric current might result from taking the battery out while on. Also, the hard-drive head might come to a screeching halt on your drive disk if the juice just drops off without being parked!

It's not recommended as you can hurt your hard drive, powering the laptop down properly allows the read heads to park.
just yanking the power might damage the read surface.
When you shut down like that, always let the system do it's drive check to make sure you don't loose any data.
Why would you want to shut it down this way, anyway?

you guys are all idiots.... :)
it wont damage your hardrive or any other component in your computer. the only thing that gets messed up are your devices settings. Its the same with desktops.
when you kill the power to your computer like that, or even by holding the power button, or loosing power to your house...you risk the CHANCE that some of your devices will shut off. im not saying that if you hold the power button your mouse wont work...cuz it will, it will just be running on the windows driver instead of the factory installed one.
but more often than not this rare occurance wont happen, and you'll be fine.

Yes and No.
No it wont damage the laptop but YES it will upset the settings.
Try switching it off normally by keeping the button pressed.
better still get it checked

I did that once accidentally (long story) and it did a system scan when I turned it back on. It's not a good idea because it stops the hard drive cold, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.
Is there a particular reason why you want to do this?

Don't do it, most definitely it will. If you can't turn it off and you think that's the way cut energy, you will probably either damage the battery or the computer, maybe both. The "hard" way to turn off a computer is by keeping the power button pressed until it turns off.

a high chance of damaging your hard drive, if it's writing to it.
if it's a company one, do it all the time! you eventually get a new one!
I once had static damage on mine, got an shock whilst holding a cuppa tea - hence wet lappy and "static damage" on the claim form!

You may lose data sometimes because the laptop did not boot out. It works alright though but I would not encourage any one to do it.

No it won't damage it, but that doesn't make it sensible. Your computer doesn't do everything it's meant to do when it shuts down by using the start/shut down button or shutting down from the program menu.
