RE:
Can anyone tell me some american traditions or customs ?
I'm from Romania and if you've heard, it's the land of all possibilities (bad) and there's not much going on here especially in Craiova. I want to know more about american way to live, how people think. I thought it would be a good idea to ask someone who really lives there.

American is a very diverse country, so there is not one single way to be American. There are several things that are unique to America, including holidays, the way of life, and the value system. We celebrate our independence day on the Fourth of July, it is basically a day to celebrate being American. We also have Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday in November, which marks when the Pilgrims first came to America. Its a holiday to celebrate family and be thankful for all the things in your life. There is also a heavy focus in America on work and doing well in society. There is the possibility for anyone, through hard work and determination, to achieve any position in the country. Some of the most successful people in the country have risen from poor backgrounds. There is also the thought that Americans are workaholics, and live to work. It's common in some professions to work 50 or more hours a week in order to achieve a higher position in a company or become richer. America also in general tends to place a high value on family, faith and country. Patriotism and religion are important to many people, more so than in other countries.

Nice to hear form you!
Most people in America work during the day, but many work afternoons and evenings to keep things going 24 hours.
IN the morning, people at work usually greet each other by saying Good morning, have a coffee break in the morning, lunch is about halfway through the day and work about a total of 8-10 hours.
It is traditional for many people to cook dinner for 6 or 7:00, then either enjoy hobbies, music or television for the evening.
Weekends are typical times to clean house, run errands like banking shopping, cleaners and eating out. Many Americans go out to dinner and a movie on Saturday night, some go dancing or attend concerts or plays.
A typical tradition on Sundays for many Americans is to have a special breakfast, attend church, then spend time home relaxing with the newspaper and watching sports on television.
These are not required customs, but they are very common in America. You can confirm them by observing the crowds at these places during these times.
The sub-standard tradition for some Americans include drinking, smoking, gambling, taking drugs, looking for trouble or just sitting in front of a television getting fat.
Yes, it is sad.

Well, i have stayed in the US for two years. Based on my personal experiences, here's what i have to say; Culture: To understand the american culture you have to understand some of the the constitutional american values of democracy, liberty and individuality. Americans attach a lot of importance to these principles which in a way reflects in their culture. Thus americans are more individualistic than fellow indians for example. In India, your care for your extended family can sometimes be unconditional and almost taken for granted; not so in america; Americans also dont have a rank system in their culture; meaning everyone is equal to begin with, and you can only 'earn' respect cannot 'command' it just because of your position. "Bhaiji, saabji, Sirjee, your lordship" etc isnt american culture. It is often said that in America "You are what you know" and not "Who you know" In the US, your social life is more or less centered around your job or the work that you do. In India your work is (at least to start off with) is centered around your social life. In the US, your job will obviously determine the city you stay in, the kind of people you're interact with more, you may find your life partner at work. As for religion, most americans are not very religious. I mean not many visit churches, or even light a candle unlike many of us indians. Americans are also in general warmer than other advanced country people. You'll often be verbally greeted by americans on the street even if you're completely strangers. Americans are very punctual. It is seriously ill mannered to not report on time or be late. Worse -- if you dont intimate your getting late. America has a relatively small past. American history is only 200 odd years old. Thus americans are not burdened with some age old customs or traditions that were basically results of illiteracy and ignorance. For example India's rich history has left us with thousands of customs and traditions and ugly legacies. Since americans are largely the offsprings of people who migrated from other countries so that they could leave such ugly legacies behind, they dont have too much of the burden of history to carry along with. Hence they could start thinking great ideas right from childhood. Thus you would not have american parents chiding a girl child for example to speak softly or to wear less revealing dresses or to cover their heads etc. Contrary to popular perception, americans do attach importance to family and kids. At least as long as the kids grow up.
