Oh and if you are giving them bran mash should you give it at feeding time as a replacement(just for one day) or feed it during the day as a treat

You can buy bran in a bag from the feed store. And you just add water. I don't use bran because my horse does not like it. I use O&M (oats and molasses). And no oats is not the oat meal oats, its a kind of hay.

Do not trade out his normal breakfast lunch or dinner for his bran or whatever you are going to feed him. It is a treat.

You also have to remember that they are animals of rutine. So if you give them food for a week you have to ween them off of it. Also you have to give them the same amount everytime.

Do not feed your horses bran!!!!

Bran has very little nutritional benefit to horses at all - and it can cause some problems too.The high phosphorus content of bran (and oats for that matter) is harmful if not balanced with adequate calcium. About 90% of the phosphorus in bran is in the form of phytate which decreases the absorption of calcium. As a result, if excess bran is fed without the minimum amount of calcium consumed being close to the same amount of phosphorus consumed, it could cause Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism - "BRAN DISEASE".

As far as "cleaning out their system" - wheat bran has been thought to have a laxative or mild cathartic effect. Research has failed to indicate that this is the case.A study at Cornell University, in which 50% wheat bran was added to a diet of hay and grain, found that fecal (manure) moisture was not different between horses receiving wheat bran and those on the control diet that received no wheat bran.As far as the fiber level of bran goes - for humans, bran is considered "high-fiber" - that's because we don't eat hay. As far as our horses go, wheat bran is higher in fiber than corn - but oats, and certainly hay are higher in fiber than bran. The most beneficial part of a bran mash is actually the water.Especially in the winter months when water intake may be reduced, the water from a mash may be very beneficial. Here's a suggestion... if you want to feed a mash, because it makes us feel good, horses love it, and they get additional water - MASH YOUR PELLETS! Commercially manufactured horse feed pellets will have balanced levels of calcium and phosphorus and be palatable to horses.

i have 4 horses and just use any kind of bran cereal put in a little warm water applesauce cut up some apples and carrots let it sit until the bran is soft. As for the oats it depends on why you are giving them oats if its for everyday feed its better to use rolled oats you get from a feed store but if you are making them a treat then you can give them like Quaker oats that you would eat yourself just make sure they are fully cooked since oatmeal swells with water if they are not fully cooked you could give your horse colic

Horses are well adapted for the cold weather, but their digestive systems are fairly sensitive. If you don't know what you're doing, you are better off not giving them something new in the cold weather. The last thing you want is one down in the cold weather!
