If you have internal wireless or even a network card it should automatically detect a signal. You then connect by clicking on the icon that should pop up in your lower right hand corner screen. If the connection is unsecured you will be directly connected. If the connection is secured you will have to enter a password.

(To correct the above answer: since your Apple laptop is presumably running Mac OS X, and not Windows, the icon for wireless signals and such will be in the *top right* of your screen, on the right-hand side of your menu bar. If the icon isn't there, open System Preferences, click on the "Network" icon, and double-click "AirPort" in the list, then make sure the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" box is checked. Your Mac should be able to automatically detect and join any open wireless networks around.)

If it's an open network you can join it using iStumbler.
