Emo is short for EMOtional. People who are emo tend to dress like goths. People who are emo are going through a tragic time in their lives, like their parents divorced or something. They slit their wrists (well some do), and tend to stay away from other people. They are also very antisocial.

Ok, almost everybody else will give you the wrong answer on this one. They'll tell you that its just a type of punk music that involves a bunch of whiny teenagers and early 20-somethings with hair pulled over their eyes complaining about things in their life that they really shouldn't be complaining about in the first place. However, emo was a concept that was originally started in the late 80's by bands like Rites Of Spring and Embrace in Washington, D.C. as an outcropping of the city's hardcore scene. This type of music was abrasive and harsh, but it influenced "softer" bands on the indie scene like Sunny Day Real Estate, and, most prominently, Weezer. The thing that tied both the hard and fast music and the softer and slower music together was the themes of the lyrical content, centering around "growing up", youth alienation, etc. Eventually, bands like Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance began to integrate these same themes into their music, and the common pop-punk musical styles, fashion, and general look of these new bands resulted in a new form of emo- the form that you are probably asking about. Basically, emo is really more of a lyrical concept than an actual musical genre, as most other answerers would have you believe.

That's funny. No, emo is not gangsta rap; it's far from it. From what I've gathered, it's short for emotional. It's the latest trend; it's what's all the "cool" kids are doing. I give it a few more years before it dies out.

I know it is short of emotional but I don't know it has something to do with specific group of people or what they wear. I heard mostly people say "I'm EMO" and started yelling or crying. I could get crazy but not that emo so I really don't know how to explain it more to you. If it's PMS well after drinking some wine I used to cool down :):)

I had an emo friend once, this was like 5 years ago, before it was all "trendy"... he told me it's a new Punk scene. Emo being short for emotional, since it's like "punk lite" and all the music is ... well... "emotional"

EMO = emotional
It's those teens who listen to songs about killing themselves, and supposdly they are "cutters" and cut their wrists, but that's usually just s stereotype of it. Not all people that are "emo" cut their wrists. Some of them usually wear dark clothes, but they are not considered goth. There is a girl in my school who everyone says is emo, and she draws pictures of bleeding black hearts all over her notes. Freaky.
