I think this is our country trying to force the UN to do something. I expect all the other countries expect the US and Britain to fix it, like we usually do. Then they complain because we reap some benefits from it later. We have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq we need help in Darfur.

Darfur is an extremely complex situation. Right now, the Chinese have contracts with the government in Sudan for oil drilling. Basically, the U.S. looks the other way while this is happening - for various reasons. For one, we are in debt up to our eyeballs with China, so interfering in Sudan when China is steeped in business contracts over there would piss off China.

What is happening in Darfur really is heartbreaking, but you have to realize that it is a complex situation that involves multiple different governments, non-governmental organizations, and multinational corporations who all have a hand in keeping the status quo over there. This makes it difficult for the U.S. to commit large amounts of money to stopping the genocide. There are political/economic reasons the U.S. won't intervene. We don't necessarily know what those are, because the whole thing is very complex.

But it is an enormous tragedy. Just tragic.

It's unfortunate that the US is not trying to do something about the Darfur crisis... the reality is, the administration is too wrapped up in the Iraq War, and so much of our resources and our troops have gone into the war effort there that it can't be abandoned now.

Also, the United States allocates BILLIONS of dollars a year to support an oppressive regime - there is NO other country in the world that receives support from us, no other country besides Israel that is.

I wish I knew why. It is heartwrenching. The whole world's consciences should be bothering them for inaction.
