It is a tradition that was initially started by St. Nicolas, who was giving out presents to children who has been good duirng Xmas. The St. Nicolas became Santa Claus (due to the phonetics similarity). And the Christmas trees was a old German tradition to have pine trees. And the Rien deers was made up by some other company (commercial purposes) All combined to gether we have Christmas (which should be truly celebrated for the birth of Christ). But I guess everyone has forgotten that.
