Mathematical rules and equations is a discovery. How we express them is what is invented.
one plus four has always been five.

How we express it is what is invented. And there are different ways to express it.

1 + 4 = 5 in base 10
1 + 100 = 101 in base 2

Consider this. There is a great deal of mathematics in nature. Heard of the Fibanacci sequence? Math. Nature......Already there. Putting something into words, like how lightening works is not a discovery.

Both, in the same sense that music is.

We 'discover' music in the world around us by perceiving relationships and patterns.

We invent different forms of music that appeal to us.

In mathematics, axioms- those root definitions that come before logical operations- are invented. Sometimes to a purpose, sometimes just to see what happens.

But, after that, the axioms are applied, rules are discovered and the resulting mathematics is 'explored' in much the same way we might explore the physical world around us.

If it was a discovery then every civilization before us, would have to use the exact same math. I think it's an approximation, a perception of what we see.
