Because in America a lot of emphasis is placed on literacy. Immigrants are considered dumb because they do not have perfect English. Children are considered dumb because they haven't mastered their language yet. (have you ever heard someone talk to kids in a baby voice? ya know what i mean then...;;;)
Unless it is very hard to understand what the person is saying, I think it is out of line to point it out... Often it's just one word or mistake that spell check missed... It's a kind of low way of showing you don't agree with, or acknowledge someone. I don't do that because I think it's mean and I feel like we should have love for each other. ♥

Guilty. Can't help it. It's a pet peeve of mine to get extremely annoyed when someone posts something that qualifies as illegible or even nonsensical due to the lack of anything being spelled even remotely correctly, but I daresay it is quite fun when someone leaves out punctuation altogether - I see that as an opportunity to completely misinterpret the question, blog, or other type of post in an attempt to help the poster to realize that there's no point in posting something for everyone to read if no one can understand what it says. Yes, I have been visited by the Typo Demons, also - no one is invulnerable to them - but I at least try to make certain that people can understand what I'm saying or trying to say. (Sometimes finding the right words is difficult, but one can at least spell correctly the ones they do find.) I understand about slang and computer shorthand (lol, bbl, afk, and using 'u', 'y', and 'r' in place of 'you', 'why', and 'are' all that good stuff), but I just don't understand, "Hey, what why dos da peopel has to act lyk their beter then us and can thay spel?" (I sh!t you not - this was how this person had summed up their "question". The actual question was even less intelligible and the details were full of this, ending with the example mentioned.)

I just prefer to be understood.

I make my share of them. I only emphasize spelling errors when I can't figure out what the person is trying to say.

Sometimes, but I make spelling errors as well. People do it because grammar and spelling are important to know to be able to get your point across. All I have to say is thank God for the edit button!

Occassinally I'll point one out to make a joke. I never emphasize them; But I always notice them. I was a teacher years ago and I guess it's just an old habit.

I used to, and sometimes still do if it really bugs me.
Typos I can deal with, but when people are trying to argue their point, thinking they're so smart, and they can't even spell...it's really irritating...and it sort of hurts my eyes, too.
I think it's offensive to parents and teachers, too, because come on, what the hell are you doing at school? Learn something!

Yes.
I confess, I do.
If people would just use the "Check Spelling" tab they would see their errors and would possibly learn to spell.

I did in the beginning, because the "check spelling" box is right....there...
but now I don't---it's not worth it.
People who do are basically trying to say "you are dumb and I am smart" and we hate that type of person on Y!A, don't we!?!?!
