Most of the time that happens because you're low on coolant, so none of it is making it to the heater core.

If you had a thermostat problem you would probably have a check engine lite. I would look at the heater hoses for a possible kink or your heater coolant valve isn't working. It is located on one of the heater hoses.

If your engine temp gauge appears to be not working correctly , i'd say have the thermostat looked at.
