You'd probably advocate abolishing Social Security and Medicare as well, right? In other words, you don't want the government providing regulations and programs that benefit the whole of society.
Minimum wages are in place to protect workers - these are the people who have much less clout than the bosses and owners of the capital. Once you get into deregulating capital and markets, you've got yourself a "darwinian" situation in which only the strong survive - meaning only the corporations will have the power - and a society in which the rich get even richer, and there will be more and more poor people.
Frankly, what we need in the U.S. is a maximum wage. We need to roll back the tax cuts that Bush instituted so that the wealthy and corporations are paying bigger shares in taxes. I'd like to see an 80% tax rate on income over $1 million.
I'd also like to see the minimum wage raised to about $15 or $20 an hour. You'd certainly have happier employees, and it would also stimulate the economy, since those workers would have more money to spend. But it'll never happen. Our politicians (including Democrats) are in bed with corporations, and they'll never let that happen.

Let me say this; I work at my current job for just above the current minumum wage and though I'm for abolishing this to a point, let's just say that you have an employer hiring people for little or nothing; It's going on right now as we speak! how will that affect the average jill or joe that needs every penny and more just to make it? then you'll have employers hiring you at $3, $4, $5 an hour and not being fair to the worker. If you abolish this then you'll have folk doing you every which kind of way and that's not fair. While I'm here let me say this; you got women raising kids on this kind of money; I am one of these women; and it's ridiculous knowing that the majority of women are raising kids on this and can barely keep their head above water. If abolishment is what you propose, then make sure that the average worker gets what is needed to live comfortably in this country.

Because it used to be that way and it wasn't working. There are some extremely miserly employers out there. It is for the uniformity of wages (at least the minimum side) to determine the poverty level and insure people make enough to pay for the necessities.

Because some unscrupulous business owners will have there employees work for slave wages and their employees will have no recourse to them.
It is the governments way of keeping the scales even and giving employers a guideline for paying wages.

If that were the case, I would be making 1,000 dollars an hour. Think about it, that would never work.
However, It is next to impossible to support yourself off minimum wage.

Go and try it. You can pay a little more in taxes, or have the dirt poor break into your house for food every other day.
