Thanks! the installer is here right now and wanted to make sure i was getting the right stuff. For now just an HD reciever

No, a DVR doesn't always have to be HD. If a DVR doesn't have component or HDMI, then it usually means it is not capable of receiving HD.

It also depends on your cable provider. I believe all Comcast DVR's are capable of HD. Of course, it depends on your service. If you don't subscribe to HD, then you won't be getting HD.

For my Comcast service, it costs me $5 for HD service and $5 for DVR service.

You do have to get an HD DVR. They are not all equipped with HD.
