i can ski but im not great at it. i would like to become better though. the thing about skiing is i have a hard time controlling myself, ESPECIALLY when the snow is icy. (my skiis skid and i can't stop/slow down.) also, im scared of going down those huge hills on the intermediate/beginner trails. can someone offer some advice on how to control my skiis (other than using the pizza, that never really works.)? also, please advise on how to improve!

Learn to link your turns so that you don't find yourself at the edge of the run and then have to turn 180 degrees to go back across. You want to spend most of your time going down the hill not across the hill. That doesn't mean straight down.

As a former ski instructor, let me ask you a question:

Have you ever gotten lessons?

If so, I find it hard to believe, since "the pizza" is the foundation of the first lesson. From that, you learn to stop, control your speed, and turn.

Granted, if it is hard and icy, then maybe nothing really works...been there, done that. Hit the lodge and drink your favorite mug of whatever. If it is icy conditions, you really have to have SHARP edges, and know how to use them...again, a lesson would show you how that works.

The first answerer clearly doesn't have a clue, as "the pizza" is the foundation of our modern day turns. Maybe not so much any more with the shaped skis, but trust me, knowing how to wedge turn leads to greater things.

We can't really give you tips on how-to here. You have to have your skis on, actually be doing the things with an instructor.

If you are interested in bettering yourself, get lessons. The sooner the better. There are some very basic foundational things that instructors go through, and the longer you cement BAD habits into your skiing, the harder it is to undo the damage.

I have never met an intermediate or above skier that DIDN'T get lessons. You will just never improve past the bunnies without them!

as a ski racer, I'm used to skiing on ice, especally since i live in Minnesota. To ski on ice, you must really be on edge. That is hard to do as a beginner skier. Trust me, the pizza doesn't suck. My dad taught me how to do that when I was 2, and I'm very good now. Get a lesson.

Its all about turning. The better you can turn the better your skills. Also, it just takes some confidence, get out there and do it and don't be afraid to fall. Its harder to turn the slower you go. Turn accross the hill and turn harder up hill when you need to slow. Your turns are what slows you.

Pizza/pie/triangle sucks unless you are in the lodge eating.
