Gu means darkness and Ru means illumination. A Guru is a light in the darkness, an example of how to manifest our goals and what they will look like when achieved. For beings of limited desires, the Guru is the example that inspires and instructs in the course of union with God. There are important attitudes in the relationship between Guru and disciple which have been described in the Guru Gita, the Song of the Guru, and there is an English translation of this great scripture by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, available at www.shreemaa.org.

Guru is not necessarily needed; but he may help in the first steps of your spiritual journey. If you want to reach higher levels of spiritualism, you must get rid of all gurus from your life and look at your internal powers, they will guide you better than any guru.
Also, being dependant on a guru will certainly stop your spiritual development, since gurus always require you to follow their way and don't let you be free to your destiny.

No, your own spirituality will be enhanced by a more experienced teacher who can try to help you on your journey; but what you have heard or read is going to be what you yourself choose to allow into your heart and seek after. A Guru (Sanskrit: गुरू, Bangla: গুরু, Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ, guru) is a spiritual guide who is considered to have attained complete insight. Many Gurus train certain followers to become a teacher. Based on a long line of philosophical understanding as to the importance of knowledge, the guru is seen in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism as a sacred conduit, or a way to self-realization.

In contemporary India and Indonesia, "guru" is widely used within the general meaning of "teacher". In modern usage, the original meaning of guru has been extended to cover anyone who acquires proficiency or followers, though not necessarily in an established school of philosophy or religion. In a further metaphorical extension, guru is used to refer to a person who has authority because of his or her perceived knowledge or skills in a domain of expertise.

Everyone has a spiritual life whether they have a guru or not. A guru may help expand your horizons or severely limit them. Ask yourself what you think you're missing in life, then ask yourself if a prospective guru seems to have it.

For ages it was said that one can awaken their own spiritual energy but it was a very dangerious thing to do. I believe some religions stir this energy with bad results. I personally prayed directly to God, with contrite heart, Please forgive my sins, (done Instantly) Please send me a teacher to show me the way. God sent me a siddha yoga guru. Swami Muktananda Paramahamsa (On web) I Thank Muktananda for still watching over my sadhana. see www.geocities.com/mihirig/siddhayoga. Muktananda left his body in 1982, Before leaving he passed his linage & power to Swami Chidvilasananda, better known to her devotes as GuruMayi. See syda.org/theguru. She has the power of God to give Shaktipat (baptize in spirit) And guide you from within spirit as you do your Sadhana ( spiritual pursuit) Jesus taught the same Guru diciple method and the same practices as Siddha Yoga. Only siddha yoga has much more clarity, because no one has distorted or misrepresented the teachings. See www.stephen-knapp.com/articles to read. A year or so and about a million words i've omitted, because of space&time. LOVE
