I need to entertain a group of children, and I have no idea what kids like. Are there any experienced clowns who can give me some pointers? Thank you very much.

Hi!

Children love to be paid attention to ... so if you can get them involved in * some * parts of your acts, that will please them... but, you need to be careful or they will take you over .. it is basically a "here, let me try!!!" situation with children...

Also, they love to take things home... so if you have favors for them, even if it is pages of drawings of things you might take off the internet.. they will like that .... hey, by the way ...
aren't there crayons or "magic pencils" and the like that make no mark until marked with a second pencil? That would amuse them.... clowns go to all lengths to show off silly business...

Especially if you are entertaining at someone's house....they would love little presents and things you can take out of great big big big duffle bags and your hat and .... dig for things in some gloves that are swinging from your belt, etc... even if it is just a little bag of peanuts ...

and always always always be sweet with them ... they will try to take you over, but never scold them or become harsh with them..... you will need to figure out some sort of a subterfuge.... and if you say, call a mother over to you to get her to help if the children interfere, be sure to give her a little present too...

I think I have stressed something too much ... but a friendly clown is a friend for life!

p.s. weren't the court jesters considered clowns...you might look into that ... see a good encyclopedia...

All the ideas mentioned here sound great--I would also recommend something extra that doesn't seem to be here. Find your own innate silliness. Be happy to be yourself! You will find that when you're clowning, the best gateway into your own spontaneity and cleverness is to allow your own "personal touch" get into what you're doing. This will make what you're doing not an "act" but an "art": the art of being you--clown and all.

It depends upon their age. Younger children ages 1-4 may enjoy silly songs, bring a basket of morraccas, tambourines, little drums and you can all march along like a marching band and sing silly songs. Older children prefer tricks, funny party favors and you can play a game like simon says and the loser gets hit with silly string. Silly string is fun if the parents do not mind cleaning up. Oh.. and do not forget fun balloon shapes or creating funny balloon hats out of those skinny balloons! Balloon swords are also easy to make and also balloon hearts !

How old are the children? How many will there be? If they are very young (under 8 years old) you'll need to find activities that move quickly - short attention span. Visit a local magic shop or book shop. You can probably find books/kits of suitable magic tricks, juggling, face painting.

Older children will probably like things that allow them to participate - card tricks, jokes, songs, etc.

Try to plan out your act before hand - figure out how much time it will take. Try to keep it brief if you can, say 20 - 30 minutes. Also, practice, practice, practice!!
