This is a simplified version.
First: HTTP: is Hypertext Transfer Protocol, and was created in the 1990's.
The Internet was created in CA at the University of California in Berkley and it's satellites. The computer people of that time (1960's) were tired of Sneaker-ware (copy to floppy and bring floppy to another part of the University). So, they created a way to communicate from computer-to-computer. Because most of these computer people were under government grants, the WWW became the providence of the Military and Government. But, since no one "owned' the Internet, and communications are a freedom of the U.S., it wasn't long before anyone with a computer bought a Modem to get online.
In the early days, the WWW wasn't uniformed and to get from one computer to another, you have to dial the direct phone number to the computer you wanted to communicate. For an example how that worked... watch the movie "War Games" with Matthew Broderick. That movie had bought possibility of the Internet to the attention to the average citizen. This was very clumsy and time consuming. As more and more people started to buy Modems, a way was created to give Website an unique naming convention to simplify getting to the site you wanted.
Naming conventions are much easier to remember than a phone number. HTTP: and HTTPS cannot be changed. Nor the www prefix or the various endings (.com, .gov, .org, etc) These are needed to help know where you are trying to reach. You can change the "Name" of the domain you create. Domain names are Yahoo, Microsoft, Walmart, etc.

I believe it was a military project, an attempt to improve communications. Address page? Well, if you just want to go to a different web site, you just go up to the Address bar, click on it to select the address, and type in the address of the web site you want. But, if you're designing a web page, you can rename your pages by going to wherever you have them saved, right-clicking on the file name, and clicking "rename" on the drop-down bar.
