When you consider the history of skyrocketing educational costs, the dent kids can make in the expenses has become less and less. They're lucky to make enough to cover pocket money. I would not be quick to jump to the conclusion that they are not working, it's just that it's impossible to put together a financing package without the other resources you mention.

These days its impossible for a student to get through school on what they can make while they are in school. Its just too expensive. At the school where I went to grad school, everybody I knew had a job, grad student or undergrad. Most also had many student loans.
On the other hand, there are many employees who will pay for employees to go to college. Thats how I finished my BS. Compared to the number of people eligible, few take advantage of that offer. It takes a long time, but unless your parents can pay for college or you get a really good scholarship, its the only way I know of to finish college without debt.

I have two sons in college right now, and both are putting themselves through school. Our contribution is free room and board, and an occassional small loan, as we cannot afford to put ours through college. Some kids are self-supporting, but more of them go to state schools or junior colleges than private schools, so it just depends on where you're looking.

The price of education has gone up considerably so it is nearly impossible for a student to pay for college without aid.

That's because your crappy American schooling system is shite...in Australia we let the Government pay for higher education. Everyone (literally everyone) gets the money from the gov't and then just pays it back after they've finished uni. It's too bloody expensive in America, that's why.
