It is genetics. Like the curling your tongue thing.
A good example of this is huskies. Red Huskies have Orange eyes and grey or white huskies have blue. If they are mixed they will almost always have one orange and one blue this is an exact half of each ot the parents genetics.

It is actually quite common and is caused by someone having both the brown and blue gene from their parents. The genetics is not that simple though and there are lots of other things that play a role. (Other-wise we would only have two colours)
It is even more common in dogs with some breeds particulary like Huskies and Collies.
The simplest answer is no-one really knows why it happens!

The pathetic thing is that everyone who has answered is completely wrong. Wow, I'm in gr 11 biology and I even have the correct answer. That is quite funny.
Eye colour is a simple dominant/recessive trait. Lighter eyes tend to be recessive and darker eyes tend to be dominant. Two different coloured eyes has little to do with this, however. This condition is caused by some environmental factor which prevents the pigment from being produced in on eye, such as a tomour on the spinal cord or possibly chemicals while in the womb. It is very complicated, but really has little to do with genetics.

I have a Catahoula Leopard Dog that has a blue eye and a brown eye. I suppose it's that way for the same reason it is in some humans...there has to be a different DNA coding sequence for each eye.

Actually, there can be multiple causes for this. Partatthepalms09 answer is one and unlike what Telemarklover said, genetics do play a role in it. But also, it can be caused due to a trauma and not genetics. But there are types of dogs where it is not uncommon to have multicolored eyes. In humans however it is mostly due to a gene mutation.

Traits passed down from your parents. They can give you a dominate or recessive gene depending on what alleles they have. I have blue eyes because it's recessive and my mom could only give me her recessive blue eye gene and then my dad who is heterogenous gave me the other recessive blue that i needed. If he gave me the brown dominate gene then my eyes would be brown like my sister's.

It is said that when a person gets one a different color than the other eye then they are a prophet and can foretell the future. They cannot see things like a whitch in a crystal ball, but they have visions or dreams(whatever you want to call them) of the future. i can't remember if the future is their own or someone elses future.
Hope this has helped you out.
Merry Christmas!

As before mentioned, it's all to do with genetics and heredity. Eye colour depends on all one gene, although many features depend on more than one (known as polygene inheritance). If both your parents have brown eyes, you will get brown eyes if the dominant (the gene that wins) gene is expressed, but if the recessive (the gene that loses out) blue-eye gene is expressed, you can still get blue eyes. It's the other way round for blue eyes.
Therefore, a person with one brown eye and blue eye is caused if both genes "draw" (are dominant).

Can't really add much to what has already been said, except David Bowie has different coloured eyes...
(Marilyn Manson doesn't count!) :)

all people on the earth contain the same genes but each one contains a specific alleles which are the different images for the same gene
each allele is responsible for formation of specific protein . this protein which gives us the color of eyes .each allele expresses about itself by producing its specific protein & as we said that each one has its allele so each one has its specific protein so each on has a specific color of eye
but in case of eyes many people may have same alleles so many people may have the same color of eye
