I noticed a leak in the driveway earlier in the week. I told my wife to park in another spot so that I could make sure it was her car. After confirming the leak was from the stratus, we stopped using it for the week. On Friday evening, we used it to go to the auto store for transmission fluid and other supplies. On the way home, the stratus shifted into second really hard. I instructed my wife to pull over. It was already getting dark, so I couldn't see anything. After working on it a bit today, I took it for a drive, and am noticing that the transmission will not shift from first to second. Is this common? And, is this going to be a very expesive fix?

a leak is a minor problem and you could save tons of money on it by finding a friend or someoen you work with that works on cars on the side in their own garage to do it, its a minor leak most likely due to leaking pan gasket, in which is inexpensive
if you maintain the transmission properly replace fluid by every 30k miles and dirve it right then it should last 130k or more definitely, unless it has a problem from factory

Will it shift manually is you start out in low? If so, maybe it's the solenoid.
Dodge and Ford FWD automatic transmissions seem to have their share of problems. I don't know about GM.
Call a couple of ATRA certified tranny repair shops and go by and get an estimate. Do not go to any tranny store like AAMCO.
